DADU

MY FATHER, SITTING IN HIS OFFICE AT HIS FAMILY'S CLOTHING FACTORY, 1983.

HE HAD THE MOST INCREDIBLE COLLECTION HANGING IN HIS CLOSET: SOME WERE MADRAS, SOME EMBROIDERED WITH ODALISQUE, PENGUINS, REGATTA FLAGS. THERE WAS EVEN A PAIR EMBLAZONED WITH DOLLAR SIGNS. I WAS SO FASCINATED WITH THEM, I USED TO ASK MY MOTHER TO PIN MY FATHER'S BRACES INTO MY TROUSERS BEFORE SCHOOL.

FOR MY FATHER, WHO TAUGHT ME ABOUT HARRIS TWEED AND SEVEN FOLD TIES, AND WHO NURTURED MY LIFELONG LOVE AFFAIR WITH MENSWEAR.

HAPPY FATHER'S DAY DADU.

ICONS: RA-RA RAUSCHENBERG

THERE ARE SOME PEOPLE WHO ARE INNATELY COOL. IN AN ERA CELEBRATING PRETENSE AND THE CONTRIVED ARTIST PERSONA, ROBBIE RAUSCHENBERG EMERGED AS A RENEGADE BON VIVANT ON THE NEW YORK SCENE. UNCONVINCED BY THE COLDNESS OF SOUP CANS AND SILKSCREENS ABOUND, HE  REFLECTED HIS MISCHIEVOUS WORLD ONTO HIS CANVASES AND MARRIED HIS COMPOSITIONS THROUGH A BRILLIANTLY PASSIONATE DANCE WITH PAINT. I LOVE HOW HE WAS ABLE TO PULL THINGS TOGETHER AND SOMEHOW CONVEY THE SHEER JOY HE FELT IN THE PROCESS OF ART MAKING:
REBUS, 1955. OIL, SYNTHETIC POLYMER PAINT, PENCIL, CRAYON, PASTEL, CUT AND PASTED PRINTED PAPERS, AND FABRIC ON CANVAS MOUNTED AND STAPLED TO FABIC IN THREE PANELS.

MONOGRAM, 1955-1959 MIXED MEDIUMS WITH TAXIDERMY GOAT, RUBBER TIRE AND TENNIS BALL.
(THIS PIECE ALWAYS CONJURES UP IMAGES OF EDWARD ALBEE'S FABULOUS PLAY 'THE GOAT'. I LOVE THE SWEET SADNESS OF THE FACE.)
DETAIL, MONOGRAM.

UNTITLED, C. 1954 FREESTANDING COMBINE: OIL, PENCIL, CRAYON, PAPER, CANVAS, FABRIC, NEWSPAPER, PHOTOGRAPHS, WOOD, GLASS, MIRROR, TIN, CORK AND FOUND PAINTING, WITH PAINTED LEATHER SHOES WITH PAINTED DOMINIQUE HEN MOUNTED ON WOOD STRUCTURE WITH 5 CASTERS.

THE BIOGRAPHY BY TOMKINS IS NOTHING SHORT OF SUPERB. IT REALLY CAPTURES THE SPIRIT OF ART MAKING IN THE 1960'S IN THE SCENE, BEYOND THE CLICHED IMAGERY OF THE FACTORY.

FOR SALE: THE FAMILY JEWELS, PART I

REMEMBER MAMAN?
WE SHARE THIS SET OF HANDS THAT CAN'T BE IDLE. WHEN SHE ISN'T COAXING HUNKS OF CLAY INTO GRACEFUL VESSELS, SHE IS BEADING THESE INCREDIBLE NECKLACES.
I WAS SO INSPIRED BY THESE PIECES I REMEMBER HER WEARING IN MY CHILDHOOD (SHE LOOKED LIKE A WILD GYPSY IN HER LONG SKIRTS AND HANDMADE SANDALS), I ASKED HER TO MAKE SOME ESPECIALLY FOR ALIX OF BOHEMIA. SHE GAMELY AGREED (SHE IS MY DARLING MOTHER AFTER ALL). BELOW ARE THE FIRST FEW HAND-MADE BEAUTIES, WORN BY MAMAN WITH SOME BITS OF ALIX OF BOHEMIA FROM HER PERSONAL COLLECTION.
1. THE BLUE ANCHOR (DV_0001)
MAMAN STRETCHES OUT TO SHOW US THE GOODS: HAND MADE CERAMIC PENDANTS COUPLED WITH AFRICAN AND INDIAN BEADS. THE GRAPHIC APPEAL OF THE BLACK AND WHITE SECTIONS ARE SUBLIME, JUXTAPOSED WITH THE ORGANIC NATURE OF THE DELICATE HAND-PAINTED ORGANIC HAND-PAINTED PENDULUM.

ITS A SACRED NUMBER THAT HAS APPEARED FOR CENTURIES IN A MULTITUDE OF SPIRITUAL TRADITIONS AND INCARNATIONS, EACH BEAD REPRESENTING A PRAYER, MANTRA OR MEDITATION. THE CHRISTIAN ROSARY ALSO HAS 108 BEADS. MAMAN'S INTERPRETATION (IN SUCH AN EXUBERANT COLOR STORY) CAN BE DOUBLED UP OR WORN SURFER STYLE, LONG TO THE BELLY BUTTON, OR EVEN SLUNG OVER A BED POST.

DAPHNE WEARS HER ONE HUNDRED EIGHT HERE WITH A CUSTOM ALIX OF BOHEMIA EDIE TUNIC IN 'FIDDLEHEAD'.

BOHEMIANS: QUESTIONS FOR ELIZABETH

BEFORE SHE BOARDED A PLANE TO TAJIKISTAN, WE MANAGED TO SIT DOWN WITH ELIZABETH, 22, FOR A FEW QUESTIONS. HERE THE BOHEMIAN LINGUIST (AND ONE OF OUR FIRST CUSTOMERS, EVER) TALKS MIMOSAS FOR BREAKFAST, ANN MARGARET'S FUR CAPE, AND THE UNLIKELY CHARMS OF CARNATIONS AND THE JERSEY SHORE.

CURRENT LOCATION? New York, but leaving for Dushanbe, Tajikistan tomorrow! (I am going there to continue my studies of the Persian Language.)
CURRENT STATE OF MIND? Terrified and exhilarated about the journey I'm embarking on.
BREAKFAST? Blueberry pancakes and mimosas.
HOLIDAY DESTINATION? Istanbul.
FLOWERS? Carnations (I find them endearing)
CLOSET STAPLE? Scarves in every colour and fabric, especially those with intricate embroidery.
FICTIONAL HERO? Scarlett O'Hara, even though I am more of a Melanie, I've always admired her gumption, courage and lack of scruples; I think she would be the yin to my yang.
FAVOURITE PIECE OF ALIX OF BOHEMIA IN YOUR CLOSET? I would have to say the 'Groupie' waistcoat, because it was my first piece and is so exceptionally original. When I wear it in New York I get jealous stares all the time.
STYLE ICONS? Ann-Margret in the movie 'Tommy', her costumes are so ridiculous that they're fantastic. Especially her silver mesh jumpsuit with white fur cape, I've have always wanted it!
MUSIC? Lifelong musical loves will always be David Bowie, Johnny Cash, Jefferson Airplane and Beethoven.
EARLY CHILDHOOD MEMORY? Going to the Jersey Shore with my Mom's entire family. Twenty-five of us in one house for a week always brought the best kind of family ruckus.
COCKTAIL? Gin and Tonic.
FAVOURITE BOOK? Lolita.
VICES? Writing dirty limericks during classes and then laughing quietly to myself.
MOTTO? A quote from Margaret Mead: "Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has."
WHO WERE YOU IN A PREVIOUS LIFE? As a child I was fascinated with animals; this might sound silly, but I like to imagine myself as having been some kind of wondrous dinosaur!

ABOVE, ELIZABETH WEARS ALIX OF BOHEMIA 'GIOVANNA' DRESS IN SWISS COTTON  IBIZA STRIPE, WITH HER OWN BELT.

THE PICASSO BLOUSE IN TOILE BLEU.
THE STARE-INDUCING (ONE OF KIND) 'GROUPIE' WAISTCOAT WITH SILK FRINGE AND WOVEN RIBBONS, WORN OVER THE PICASSO BLOUSE.

HONG KONG GARDEN

LIVING IN HONG KONG TWO YEARS NOW, THIS URBAN AND WILD LANDSCAPE STILL FEELS FOREIGN, CONSISTENTLY PRESENTING EXOTIC TREASURES. I OFTEN FEEL AS THOUGH I AM SEEING EVERYTHING FOR THE FIRST TIME. WE HAVE BEEN ON A BIT OF A FLORAL TANGENT LATELY, WHAT WITH PERFECTLY LOVELY TEXTILES AND FLOWER CHILDREN AND SUCH, BUT AFTER TAKING THIS WEEKEND ON THE PEAK, ITS TIME TO SHARE THE INSPIRATION IN ITS ORIGINAL CONTEXT:
THE AFOREMENTIONED CONTRAST, ONE WHICH SEEMS SO STRANGE, THE URBAN AND WILD LANDSCAPES COLLIDING.

I FOUND THIS TREE SO FABULOUS WITH ITS BUNCHES OF BRIGHT GREEN CLUSTERS. I WAS TEMPTED TO RUN HOME AND EXPERIMENT WITH DANGLING POM POMS. LUCKILY I RESTRAINED MESELF; THERE IS NO WAY I COULD EVEN BEGIN TO DUPLICATE THE SUBTLETY AND SIMPLE PERFECTION SEEN HERE.

RUNNING WITH THE THEME, NEW LATTICE COTTON CANVAS IN KEEPING WITH THE FLORA-FAUNA MOTIF.
